Returning guests Dr. Ellen Albertson and Candace Sanchez, two wellness coaches, will join us for a practical conversation about self-care, guilt, and what it really takes to care for ourselves in the middle of busy, stressful lives.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Ep. 49 of Shining Light on Shadows: A Candid Conversation About Mental Health, “The Importance of Self-Care” will center on what people can do to become healthier, more grounded, and more intentional about self-care.

Join me, Dawn Neuburg (my co-host) and our guests on Thursday, May 14 at 7pm ET / 6pm CT.

We will explore why so many of us struggle with self-care — including the belief that we are “bad at it,” the pressure to keep going, and the guilt that can come with resting or putting our own needs first. We will also talk about the difference between true self-care and numbing behaviors, such as overworking, emotional eating, binge-watching, or using distractions to avoid what we are feeling.

The conversation will offer accessible, realistic examples of self-care that do not require a major life overhaul: taking breathing breaks, drinking water, pacing work, going for a walk, preparing meals, journaling, taking naps, and recognizing when our nervous systems are overwhelmed. Self-care is not selfish — it is part of staying well enough to keep showing up.

Programming Notes

April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Both of our April episodes focused on that topic:

Cyrena Martin was our guest for Ep. 48, “Sexual Assault Survivors’ Trauma Isn’t a Competition”

Background

Dawn and I launched this twice a month show (usually the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month) in order to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Thank you for being part of our community.

We are proud to be in Year 3 of the show. If you are interested in being a guest on the show or know someone who might be interested, please let us know. We’re looking for people who would be willing to share their story, advocates and people who work in the field of mental health.

We hope you can watch the show and share your own thoughts in the comments.
