September 11:
One Family. Three Personal Accounts.
Twenty-five years since September 11, my mother, my sister and I each remember the events of that day from a very different perspective.
My mother, Sudha, was in New York and later volunteered with the American Red Cross, listening to families who were searching for and grieving loved ones.
My sister, Amy, was supposed to attend a conference at the World Trade Center that morning. A change-of-venue notice sent her somewhere else instead.
I was 2,800 miles away in Seattle, watching what was happening to the city I still considered home and, in the days that followed, confronting the anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant backlash after the attacks.
For the 25th anniversary, I wanted to preserve all three accounts together.
