In the scramble for artificial intelligence, humanity is losing track of its emotional intelligence. Social media alone continues to generate depression and anxiety on scales unimaginable. Is it possible that the increasing use of AI for everyday tasks is making people more selfish, impatient, and violent?

Prof. Walter Greason (Macalester College), our guest for Ep. 44 of “Shining Light on Shadows: A Candid Conversation About Mental Health,” will lead us in a discussion about the mental health impacts of AI use.

He has been working with AI and chatbots for years. He is a professor of history and economics and has a range of different interests. I primarily know him for his work on Afrofuturism and The Graphic History of Hip Hop. When I asked him about being a guest on this show, the first thing he talked about was the impact of AI.

Please join us Thursday, February 26 at 7pm ET / 6pm CT / 4pm PT for what is sure to be a fascinating discussion.

Dawn Neuburg and I both use AI in a number of different ways. We have our own concerns about how it’s being used and the impact it is having on society.

I ran the premise of this discussion through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude and got some interesting results. I will share them during the show (Yes, I used it for a somewhat everyday task...Think of it as research.)

Programming Notes

On February 12, Dr. Micheal Kane joined us for Ep. 43: Black Mental Health: Trauma & Its Impacts Across the Lifespan. In addition to focusing on Black Mental Health, we also talked about trauma and recovery. I was extremely proud to have him as a guest on our show. He was my therapist for about ten years when I lived in Seattle. Click here to watch.

In March, we will host shows on the first and third Thursdays because of scheduling conflicts.

On March 5, Alejandra Anastas will join us for Episode 45. In light of the current administration’s use of ICE to terrorize communities and increased immigration enforcement, Alejandra will talk about the mental health toll of constantly looking over your shoulder, worrying if you’re next.

Background

Dawn and I launched this twice a month show (usually the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month) in order to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Thank you for being part of our community.

We are proud to be in Year 3 of the show. If you are interested in being a guest on the show or know someone who might be interested, please let us know. We’re looking for people who would be willing to share their story, advocates and people who work in the field of mental health.

We hope you can watch the show and share your own thoughts in the comments.
