Black Mental Health: Trauma & Its Impacts Across the Lifespan. There’s a lot to unpack there. Dr. Micheal Kane, a clinical traumatologist based in Seattle will be our guest on Ep. 43 of Shining Light on Shadows: A Candid Conversation About Mental Health.

On a personal note, Dr. Kane was my therapist for almost ten years when I lived in Seattle. It means the world to me that he will be a guest on our show.

We’ll hear from Dr. Kane about lifelong and intergenerational trauma that is specific to African Americans, particularly the trauma of invisibility.

He will also share his insights on how everyone—regardless of race—processes trauma and the ABCs of living IN vs. living WITH one’s trauma. He’ll explain that we need to 1) be Advocates of our own healing, 2) that we need to find balance and 3) that we need to find calmness. Most importantly, we need self-love.

Please join us Thursday, February 12 at 7pm ET / 6pm CT / 4pm PT for what is sure to be a fascinating discussion.

Here are a few blog posts from Dr. Kane that highlight some of the issues we will be discussing:

He received masters degrees in social work from the University of Washington in 1983, clinical psychology from Argosy University / Seattle in 2002, and completed postgraduate studies in Traumatology from the Justice Institute of British Columbia, (Vancouver, BC) Canada.

He is a clinical traumatologist and a certified trauma specialist through the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists (ATSS) and holds clinical diplomates from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work (ABECSW).

Background

Dawn and I launched this twice a month show (usually the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month) in order to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Thank you for being part of our community.

We are proud to be in Year 3 of the show. If you are interested in being a guest on the show or know someone who might be interested, please let us know. We’re looking for people who would be willing to share their story, advocates and people who work in the field of mental health.

We hope you can watch the show and share your own thoughts in the comments.
