Ep. 36 of “Shining Light on Shadows: A Candid Conversation About Mental Health” focuses on Teen Mental Health. Paige Goble, a 17-year-old senior at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia will be our guest. She will share some of the mental health challenges she experienced as a Freshman, the challenges she had finding help as a Sophomore and, once she found help, her efforts to help other students as a Junior. She is really coming into her own as a mental health advocate.

My co-host is Dawn Helmrich Neuburg.

Our show will be live Thursday, September 11 at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT / 4 p.m. PT. If you can’t watch the live show, feel free to watch the recording on this page or on the links below.

Programming Notes

Ep. 35 featured Karissa Gretebeck, talking about the challenges of parenting two children, particularly when one has physical or emotional challenges. That conversation also touched on the impact on her own mental health.

Episode Details

Paige doesn’t hold back in the blog post she wrote for this episode. Here’s the opening, “I’ve struggled with anxiety for years, nearly all my life, and when I reached high school I began to hit a boiling point. I would struggle with daily anxiety, tear at my fingers until they bled, peel at my lips, and have mental break downs and panic attacks.”

I encourage you to read it even if you can’t watch the episode.

One of the groups she has raised money for is NAMI of Northern Virginia. Michael Wood, NAMI’s COO was a recent guest on our show.

She has also worked closely with Morgan's Message and Work2BeWell.

It’s also worth reflecting on the show we did with Sara Wilson last year. She’s a therapist in Washington State who works closely with teenagers and young adults.

I’m so glad that Paige and other teenagers are talking about mental health. We never talked about this when Dawn and I were her age, thirty-five years ago.

I’m particularly thankful because my daughter is a seventh grader at the same school. The work Paige and her friends are doing will change the way Emily and her friends talk about mental health when she’s in high school.

Background

Dawn and I launched this twice a month show (the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month) in order to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Thank you for being part of our community.

We are proud to be in Year 2 of the show. If you are interested in being a guest on the show or know someone who might be interested, please let us know. We’re looking for people who would be willing to share their story, advocates and people who work in the field of mental health.

We hope you can watch the show and share your own thoughts in the comments.
