Our next episode of Shining Light on Shadows will focus on ageism in the delivery of mental health services for seniors and the importance of keeping a closer eye on our older friends and loved ones. Our guest will be Jonathan Boorstein, a self-described older person.

Episode 31 of “Shining Light on Shadows: A Candid Conversation About Mental Health” will be live Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT / 4 p.m. PT. If you can’t watch the live show feel free to watch the recording on the same links.

*We won't know the exact urls for Twitter and Instagram until we go live. For now, these links go to Neil's Twitter and Dawn's Instagram.

Jonathan’s blog post for this episode, “When You Are Older, Your Mental Health is Not a Priority” refers both to the fact that mental health professionals tend not to take the concerns of older people seriously AND the fact that some seniors, like Jonathan, might make a conscious decision not to prioritize their mental health as they get older.

Dawn’s blog post, “Watching My Dad Get Older Gives Me a New Perspective on Aging” focuses on how as we get older, things in life get more complicated and therefore mental health gets harder. She writes lovingly about her father and the challenges he has faced as he gets older.

Programming Notes

We are live the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. Our next show will be Thursday, June 26.

Previous Episode

Ep. 30 featured Aisha Sultan, talking about a series of Mental Health shows she produced for 9 PBS in St. Louis, “Things We Don’t Talk About.”

Background

Dawn and I launched this twice a month show (the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month) in order to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Thank you for being part of our community.

We are proud to be in Year 2 of the show. If you are interested in being a guest on the show or know someone who might be interested, please let us know. We’re looking for people who would be willing to share their story, advocates and people who work in the field of mental health.

We hope you can watch the show and share your own thoughts in the comments.

“Shining Light on Shadows: A Candid Conversation About Mental Health” is produced by Digimentors on a pro bono basis.
